Q&A with Gary
Why are you running for WISD School Board?
When I first retired from teaching in 2008, I just knew I was not done helping kids. I felt that being on the school board in my hometown would be a great way to continue to serve. While challenging at times, I loved every minute of serving as a trustee. In 2018, I chose not to re-run for my position on the school board, because I was having some heart problems. I'm doing much better now after a heart procedure and am ready to continue to serve Waxahachie ISD. My whole life has been devoted to education, and I truly care about everyone who lives, works, and goes to school in the Waxahachie Independent School District.
Do you have any immediate family members in the district?
No, I do not. My son graduated from WHS in 2012 and worked in WISD for a few years. However, I currently do not have any family members who attend or work for WISD. If elected, my position on the board would not result in any conflicts of interest. I am seeking to serve, only to ensure a strong education for our students and a great working environment for our staff.
If elected, what do you hope to accomplish while serving the district?
We are in a time of unprecedented growth and change for the district. State funding is uncertain. Waxahachie Creek High will be opening soon. Growth within the district is causing enrollment fluctuations across the campuses. Staff retention and satisfaction are a concern. With that said, our fundamental purpose is to provide a quality education for the students within our district. My goal is to provide an educator's perspective on the issues our district faces, while keeping our students safe, ensuring our staff are supported, and efficiently managing district resources. We can adjust to the challenges we face today while still ensuring the tradition of excellence continues.
What makes you the best candidate?
#1 I have over 30 years of teaching experience and 9 years of prior service on the WISD board. I know the challenges we face and can hit the ground running. There will not be a learning curve for me.
#2 I have the time and desire to fulfill this position to the best of my ability. As a retired educator, I can dedicate 100% of my time to this role - attending meetings, listening to constituents, and supporting students at games/meets/performances. I have no other conflicts that will prevent me from serving the students and staff of WISD.
#3 I truly care about WISD. I know how time consuming, challenging, and difficult this role can be. I did it for 9 years, and I hope to serve WISD again because I love this community. I love public education. And I will always put our students first. I thank the community for trusting me to serve in this role before, and I sincerely hope I can count on your vote again.
If elected, will you be approachable to students, staff, and community members who have questions or concerns?
During my time on the board, I prided myself on always being available to WISD stakeholders. I spent many hours on the phone talking to concerned parents or community members. I will always do my best to be available to answer questions and try to direct you to the appropriate individuals who can best support you. There are procedures in place for how to address certain issues within a school district and laws dictating how matters involving minors and staff members must be handled. However, I will always be open to hearing from anyone within the district and will follow up with you as appropriate.
